Nylon Sutures (Monofilament)

Non-absorbable Sutures

Synthetic
For minimal tissue reaction.
Provides prolonged tensile strength retention in tissue.

Description :

Nylon suture is a non-absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of the long chain aliphatic polymers Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6.  Nylon sutures are available in either black or blue, Nylon sutures elicit minimal inflammatory reaction in tissue. This process is usually followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue. While  Nylon is not absorbed, progressive hydrolysis may cause a gradual loss of up to 20% in its tensile strength each year. Nylon sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures.

Nylon  blue and undyed are indicated for the closure of superficial wounds and plastic surgery. Nylon blue is also used in neurosurgery. Nylon black is used for microsurgical and ophthalmic purposes.
As with any nylon suture, though not absorbed, progressive hydrolysis of the suture, may result in gradual loss of its tensile strength over time.

Distinctive Characteristics of  Nylon Sutures:

·  Easy passage through tissues due to its low frictional coefficient.

·  Minimal tissue reactivity.

·  Excellent elasticity.

·  Exceptional for skin closures.

·  Small USP sizes are designed specifically for microsurgical and ophthalmic procedures.

Flexible, easy to handle and tie
- Smooth passage through tissue
- Excellent histocompatibility

The smoothness of monofilament nylon sutures gives a clinician the advantage of being easily removed from tissue. The blue color of Nylon provides visibility compared to other nylon sutures.

Blue colour  ,Easier to see for knot placement and removal in areas of dense natural hair where a black suture is less visible.

Monofilament
Extruded to provide a strong uniform strand.
Smooth surface will not support bacterial growth.
Good handling and pliability characteristics permit easy, secure knotting.

These sutures comply with the requirements of U.S. Pharmacopoeia (U.S.P.)
and The European Pharmacopoeia (PhEUR).

Braided Nylon:

sutures are use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological surgery. Monofilament and Braided sutures are inert, nonabsorbable, sterile sutures composed of the long-chain aliphatic polymers Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6. The braided sutures are coated uniformly with silicone to enhance handling characteristics, ease of passage through tissue and reduction of capillarity. Monofilament sutures are nonabsorbable nylon surgical sutures which are available either dyed black, with Logwood extract, or undyed (clear). Monofilament sutures are nonabsorbable nylon surgical sutures and are available dyed blue and black. Braided sutures are also nonabsorbable nylon surgical sutures available dyed black or undyed (white). Monofilament and Braided nylon sutures meet all requirements established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopeia (EP) except for minor variations in suture diameter for NYLON

sizes 0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0.

Monofilament Nylon (Polyamide) has the advantage of surface smoothness and

completely uniform diameter throughout the length of the suture thread. It is noncapillary

and has excellent knot holding ability and is most compatible with body tissue.

Sterilisation
By Irradiation or Ethylene Oxide.
