Description :

Nylon suture is a non-absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of the long chain aliphatic polymers Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6.  Nylon sutures are available in either black or blue, Nylon sutures elicit minimal inflammatory reaction in tissue. This process is usually followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue. While  Nylon is not absorbed, progressive hydrolysis may cause a gradual loss of up to 20% in its tensile strength each year. Nylon sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures.

Nylon  blue and undyed are indicated for the closure of superficial wounds and plastic surgery. Nylon blue is also used in neurosurgery. Nylon black is used for microsurgical and ophthalmic purposes.
As with any nylon suture, though not absorbed, progressive hydrolysis of the suture, may result in gradual loss of its tensile strength over time.

Braided Nylon:

sutures are use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological surgery. Monofilament and Braided sutures are inert, nonabsorbable, sterile sutures composed of the long-chain aliphatic polymers Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6. The braided sutures are coated uniformly with silicone to enhance handling characteristics, ease of passage through tissue and reduction of capillarity. Monofilament sutures are nonabsorbable nylon surgical sutures which are available either dyed black, with Logwood extract, or undyed (clear). Monofilament sutures are nonabsorbable nylon surgical sutures and are available dyed blue and black. Braided sutures are also nonabsorbable nylon surgical sutures available dyed black or undyed (white). Monofilament and Braided nylon sutures meet all requirements established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopeia (EP) except for minor variations in suture diameter for NYLON

sizes 0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-0 and 7-0.

Monofilament Nylon (Polyamide) has the advantage of surface smoothness and

completely uniform diameter throughout the length of the suture thread. It is noncapillary

and has excellent knot holding ability and is most compatible with body tissue.

Silk Sutures

Silk suture is a non-absorbable, sterile, surgical suture composed of an organic protein called fibroin. silk sutures are processed to remove the natural waxes and gums from its origin. As Silk is a natural fiber, its does illicit an acute inflammatory reaction, which is followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue (occurring usually in 14-21 days). While  silk sutures are not considered absorbable sutures, progressive degradation of its fibers results in the gradual loss of tensile strength within the first year. silk sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation. sutures are available white or colored black with Logwood extract. The braided sutures are available coated uniformly with either silicone or a special wax mixture to reduce capillarity and to increase surface lubricity which enhances handling characteristics, ease of passage through tissue, and knot run-down properties.

Virgin silk is a non-absorbable, twisted suture, made of natural silk filaments. Virgin silk is indicated in ophthalmic surgery in soft tissues

 

Distinctive Characteristics of  Silk Multifilament Sutures:

      Raw silk is produced by a silkworm larva's cocoon. These natural waxes and gums are removed prior to the        braiding process, allowing for a tighter, more compact braid.   

·   Silk is dyed black for easier visibility in tissue.

·   Silk is non-absorbable and multifilament in nature.

·  Although classifies its silk as a non-absorbable suture, it loses most of its tensile strength in one year, and is completely absorbed in 2 years. Thus, Silk behaves like a very slow absorbing suture.

·  coats its Silk in silicon to limit absorption, increase ductility, and minimize tissue reactivity.

Surgical Steel sutures are non-absorbable, sterile, surgical sutures composed of high quality stainless steel. Because of its high tensile strength, it exhibits very minimal loss over time and has low tissue reactivity. surgical steel is available as a monofilament. Surgical Steel is recommended for surgeries ranging from orthopedic surgery to sternal closure. Due to its rigidity, extreme care should be used when handling surgical steel to avoid fragmentation, which could pose harm to both the surgeon and patient.

Directions for using sternotomy suture materials

Description: Sternotomy suture material is a monofil non-absorbable implantable surgical suture material made of high-grade surgical stainless steel AISI 316 LVM or Titan-wire. Sternotomy suture have yellow-edged labels. Sternotomy suture are available in different lengths and diameters and are armed with single high-grade stainless steel needles of different types of points, lengths, and curves. Sternotomy suture comply with the requirements of European pharmacopoeia in terms of sterile, surgical suture materials. Refer to our catalogue for more detailed information.

Indication: Sternotomy suture materials made of high-grade stainless steel or Titan-wire are intended for the closing of the sternum, using surgical techniques by which means monofil suture materials made of high-grade stainless steel or Titan-wire are inserted.

Application: The needle and thread combination to be used is selected according to the condition of wound, patient, area or application, surgical technique being applied and corresponding with the experience of the surgeon.

Actron: Sternotomy suture material made of high-grade stainless steel or Titan-wire triggers a minimal acute inflamed reaction in the tissues. Absorption does not occur.

Contraindications: Sternotomy suture material made of high-grade stainless steel or Titan-wire is not approved for use in patients who are sensitive towards or allergic to the metals contained in the high-grade stainless steel AISI 316 LVM (iron, nickel, chromium and manganese etc.).

Warnings/ Precautions: Since the risk of wound dehiscence is dependent on the area of the body and suture material being inserted, the user should be familiar with surgical methods and techniques (especially with knot techniques), by which means Sternotomy suture materials made of high-grade stainless steel or Titan-wire are used for sealing wounds, In the event of drainage, or closure of infected or contaminated wounds, generally acknowledged surgical techniques must be followed. In general, when using Sternotomy suture, you should ensure that the suture material is not damaged or squashed by surgical instruments such as forceps, needle-holders or tweezers, since this could result in negative changes in the tensile strength of the suture material and in its safety. When using Sternotomy suture, you should ensure that you grip the middle of the needle and do not damage either the point or armed end of the needle with surgical instruments like tweezers or needle holders, since otherwise this can cause the needle to bend or break. When separating needle from thread suitable forceps should be used and the separation must occur at a distance of at least 4-5 cm from the end of the needle shaft. In general, surgical needles should be handled with meticulous care when in use in order to avoid needle-prick injuries to patient and user. Suitable containers must be used for the disposal of needles.

Side-effects: The following side-effects can occur with the insertion of Sternotomy suture materials made of high-grade stainless steel or Titan-wire:- wound dehiscence, wound infections, allergic reactions in patients sensitive towards or allergic to high-grade steel AISI 316 LVM or Titan, slight acute inflamed reactions in the tissues and temporary local irritation.

Tips on the sterility: Sternotomy suture materials are packed in units of 1-6 and supplied in a sterile state. If packaging is damaged the suture materials must not be used. With unopened packs sterility is guaranteed to the expiry date on the pack.

Storage conditions: Sternotomy suture should be stored at a temperature of below 32°C. Protect from dampness and direct sunlight. Do not continue using after the expiry date.

 

 

 

         

PTFE

The new polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surgical membrane is specifically designed to prevent adhesion formation. The present study was planned in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the PTFE surgical membrane as a parietal peritoneal substitute. Furthermore, the effects of the suture material used to implant the membrane under different operating conditions (clean or contaminated surgery) were also evaluated. One hundred-eighty rats were divided into 9 groups and underwent the following surgical procedures: Group 1: removal of a parietal peritoneum patch, which was left unrepaired; Group 2: a similar peritoneal defect was covered with the PTFE membrane by 8 polypropylene sutures; Group 3 (control group): only the 8 polypropylene suture were placed on the margin of the standard peritoneal defect; Group 4: the same procedure as in Group 2, using as sewing material PTFE sutures; Group 5 (control group): only the 8 PTFE sutures were placed on the margin of the standard peritoneal defect; Group 6, 7, 8 and 9: the same procedures as in Group 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively, adding division and subsequent reanastomosis of the caecum. Animals of each group underwent a second laparotomy 10 days or 3 months after surgery for evaluation of the extent and density of adhesions, and of the intraperitoneal organ involvement. Histological examination of adhesions which formed was then carried out. No adhesions developed in rats of group 1, while they were always present in all the other groups. Under clean surgery, the adhesions were limited to the margin of the peritoneal defect, while under contaminated surgery they formed also on its central portion. The PTFE surgical membrane itself caused variations neither of the extent and density of adhesions which developed nor of the magnitude of intraperitoneal organ involvement. The type of suture material used to implant the membrane had no effect on adhesion formation.

Polyester

Synthetic non-absorbable monofilament  or braided suture  made of Polyester available in blue colour to enhance visibility and white.

Polyester , Nonabsorbable monofilament surgical sutures are composed of polybutester, a copolymer of butylene terephthalate and polytetramethylene ether glycol.

Sutures meet all requirements established by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and European Pharmacopoeia (EP) for nonabsorbable surgical sutures.

Polyester sutures are sterile, surgical sutures composed of Polyethylene Terephthalate. They are prepared from fibers of high molecular weight, long-chain, linear polyesters having recurrent aromatic rings as an integral component. The monofilament sutures are uncoated and the braided sutures are available uncoated or coated uniformly with polybutylene adipate to increase surface lubricity, thereby enhancing handling characteristics, ease of passage through tissue, and knot run-down properties. Polyester sutures are inert and elicit only minimal local tissue reaction. They are available dyed with D&C Green No. 6 colorant and are also available undyed (white). sutures meet all requirements established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopeia (EP) for nonabsorbable surgical sutures except where indicated on the individual unit package.
