Rapid Absorbable suture is a synthetic, absorbable, sterile, surgical suture composed of a glycolide acid. Rapid Absorbable has been found to be nonantigenic and nonpyrogenic, eliciting only minimal tissue reactivity during the absorption process. Due to a lower molecular weight, relative to  PGA or Polyglactin, Rapid Absorbable is able to achieve a faster absorption period than other synthetic absorbable sutures. The absorption time for Rapid Absorbable is 42 to 56 days. Rapid Absorbable sutures are available violet and colorless.

Polyglycolic acid (PGA).  RAPID :

Polyglycolic acid (PGA).  RAPIDSuture is intended for use in soft tissue approximation where only short term wound support is required and where the rapid absorption of the suture would be beneficial. Due to its absorption profile Coated Polyglycolic acid (PGA).  RAPID Suture is useful for skin closure, particularly in paediatric surgery, episiotomies, circumcision and closure of oral mucosa. Coated Polyglycolic acid (PGA).  RAPIDSuture is also successfully used in ophthalmic surgery for conjunctival sutures.

Coated Polyglycolic acid (PGA).  RAPIDSuture is produced from the same source polymer as Coated Polyglycolic acid (PGA). Suture, namely Polyglactin At 5 days post implantation 50% of the original tensile strength remains. Coated Polyglycolic acid (PGA).  RAPIDSuture provides effective wound support for 10 days. Typically the stitch falls off 10-14 days post-operatively or it can be wiped off with sterile gauze.

What is fast absorbable PGA?

PGA Rapid is a synthetic absorbable surgical braided and coated suture composed of polyglycolic acid (PGA) homopolymer. The characteristics of rapid loss of strength are achieved by use of gamma  irradiation technique to regular polyglycolic acid used for PGA

PGA Rapid is only available in the undyed form.

PGA Rapid meets all the requirements established by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP)  and the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) for Synthetic Absorbable Surgical Sutures.

PGA - Rapid typically looses its breaking strength 9 ~ 11 days after application and its entire strength is  lost in 17 ~ 21 days after use. Trisorb Rapid maintain 50% its original breaking strength 9 days post implantation.

Due to the rapid loss of its breaking strength PGA Rapid should not be used where extended  approximation of tissue under stress like cardiovascular tissue or muscle is required or where  wound support beyond 7 days is required.

PGA Rapid suture suitable for superficial skin closure, scalp plastic surgery, episiotomy wound healing or oral mucosa.

These sutures comply with the requirements of U.S. Pharmacopoeia (U.S.P.) and The European Pharmacopoeia (PhEUR) except for an occassional slight oversize in some gauge sizes.

Distinctive Characteristics of  Rapid Absorbable Sutures:

  • Rapid Absorbable sutures give the best characteristics of both natural and synthetic sutures, allowing for the low infection rate of a synthetic suture, while providing the quick absorption and high tensile strength of collagen sutures (catguts).

  • Clinical trials have shown that after two weeks, only about 18% of  Rapid Absorbable initial strength remained.
  • At three weeks, only approximately 3% of  Rapid Absorbable linear tensile strength remained.
